Welcome to your Newborn Photography Session Guide
What to expect
Please allow 3 hours for your newborn photoshoot. This allows the photoshoot to work around your baby, as we stop to ensure their feeding and settling needs are met.
You don’t need to bring anything, Louise has everything you need. She has a variety of blankets, hats, headbands and nappy covers. However, if there is anything you have that you would like included in your photoshoot, please let Louise know and she will be more than happy to include it. Louise will direct you as to what you should do and how the session will flow.
Preparing for the session
If possible, please feed your baby before you leave your house for your session. This will ensure that your baby is ready to go when you get to the studio. Louise generally takes sleepy shots of babies, so if your baby is due to sleep around the time she is due to arrive, it would be ideal to try and keep her awake and Louise will settle baby to sleep in the first pose. When you are dressing your baby before the shoot, please remove his singlet and dress him in an outfit one size up. This will make it much easier to get started.
Older children that are being included in the photoshoot should be fed and we should avoid their nap time. Please let Louise know if your child naps so that she can ensure that the sibling shots are done when the children are still happy.
Family shots
Family shots with the baby are highly encouraged, however, these shots are limited to immediate family only as newborn sessions are already quite long.
What to wear
As Louise’s images illustrate, the best clothing choices for newborn photography are classic, plain, simple outfits. In the weeks after baby is born, Louise understands that the focus is all on the baby, and it is this connection that we want to capture. It is very important to pay particular attention to your hair, makeup and nails (as they may be in close up shots). Taking some time for yourself before the shoot to ensure that you are happy with your hair and makeup will result in images that you will be much happier with.
When deciding on what to wear, choose your outfit first, it should be an outfit that flatters you and that you feel good in.
Once you have chosen your outfit, you can then select what the rest of the family will wear. The best way to choose clothes is to choose pieces for each member of the family that are complimentary colours. For example, if you are wearing a bright red dress, the image won't look harmonious if the rest of the family is wearing pastel colours.
It is best to avoid t'shirts with logos, slogans, bold patterns and stripes. Some details to watch include making sure your child's hair is tidy and that the men have shaved recently.
If you have older children, keep the following in mind when dressing them. A neutral colour scheme is best, so we don’t detract from the relationship with the baby. Avoiding casual t’shirts, particularly those with slogans, and avoiding busy prints is best. Jeans with no shirt can work well for boys and girls in a plain white dress is equally as classic. The following are outfits that may give you some ideas of what other ideas work well for children. If you are having trouble selecting an outfit, please call Louise and she will happily guide you via FaceTime.
After your session
It takes approximately two weeks to edit your images and prepare your gallery for viewing. Louise will organise a viewing session approximately two weeks after your session.
